Benefits of employing young people enrolled in The Australian Technical College – Darwin

Giving young people work skills that you, as an employer, need makes good business sense.  Thousands of employers across Australia have offered young people an opportunity to start training for a career while they were still at school and have seen the benefits flow on to their businesses.  You can help a young person to get a head start on a career, just as these businesses have done.

Many schools across Australia, including Darwin-based institutions, offer young people the opportunity to start training for a career before they leave school through the Australian School-based Apprenticeships.  By taking on an Australian School-based Apprentice you are passing on your valuable knowledge, skills and experience to the next generation, helping to build a local skills base, and strengthening school, local industry and community links.  This is a great outcome for your business and for the local community.

Employer Incentives

The Apprenticeships Incentives Programme encourages employers to open up skills-based training opportunities in a wide range of industries. Standard incentives of up to $4,400 apply for apprentices and trainees undertaking Certificate III or IV level training, with additional incentives provided for Australian priority areas. Additional incentives applicable to skills needs industries include:
  • $1,100 for employers of apprentices and trainees undertaking training in skills needs qualifications in rural and regional areas;
  • $1,210 for employers of apprentices and trainees in listed innovation industries.
Finding a perfect match
Just as students undergo a rigorous selection and assessment program to match the right student to the right trade, The Australian Technical College – Darwin reviews likely employers to ensure their suitability to take on an apprentice. We then move onto the challenge of matching the right student to your business by taking into account the many variables that contribute to a mutually agreeable work partnership.

What do I have to provide as an employer?
  • Your time in working with The Australian Technical College - Darwin to identify your needs and develop a suitable training program for an apprentice
  • Your willingness to mentor a young, enthusiastic new staff member who will work hard while learning their trade.
  • Your agreement to abide by the occupational health, safety and any other legislative requirements in place to support young apprentices.
Support services for employers
The Australian Government provides support for the apprenticeship system through Australian Apprenticeship Centres (AACs). Employers of Australian School-based Apprentices who are our students are eligible for AAC assistance. AACs provide a free service to employers to help with the administration, including sign-up and lodgment of an Apprenticeship Training Contract. ACCs also:
  • provide information on apprenticeship options to employers
  • market and promote apprenticeships in the local area
  • administer the Australian Government’s Apprenticeships Incentives Programme
  • work with the NT Education and Training Authority to provide an integrated service; and
  • establish relationships with Australian Government contracted Job Network members, training providers, schools and other organisations.

These free services are available to employers and students in the Darwin area.

Industry engagement and liaison
One of the fundamental elements of The Australian Technical College - Darwin, and a key difference to existing institutions, is the leadership role that local industry and business plays in the operation and governance of the college.  The Board has significant industry leadership and representation. This direct involvement of industry will ensure the college’s curriculum matches what is needed in the local region.

Local industry and community representatives have a leadership role in the governance of The Australian Technical College - Darwin. The direct involvement of industry and community leaders ensures that the skills learned match those skills required by the trade and local businesses. Students will be trained in these skills through an Australian School-based Apprenticeship which leads to a nationally recognised qualification. At the same time students complete the academic subjects required for their NTCE.
